  14.             PRESIDENT NAMES JONES AMBASSADOR TO MEXICO

  16. (Washington, DC)    The President declared his intention today to 
  17. nominate Jim Jones, the CEO of the American Stock Exchange and 
  18. former House Budget Committee Chairman, to the position of 
  19. Ambassador to Mexico.
  20.  
  21.      "A great deal of our economic future," said the President, 
  22. "is bound up in our relationships in this hemisphere, 
  23. particularly our relationship with Mexico.  That is why I have 
  24. chosen an Ambassador who is seasoned by years of economic 
  25. leadership in both the private and public sectors.  Jim Jones 
  26. brings a unique perspective and uncommon talents to the 
  27. continuing dialogue with our Mexican neighbors."

  29.      Jones has been the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of 
  30. the American Stock Exchange since 1989, and also serves as 
  31. Chairman of the American Business Conference.  From 1973-1987, he 
  32. represented Oklahoma's 1st Congressional District in the U.S. 
  33. House of Representatives, serving for four of those years as 
  34. Chairman of the Budget Committee.  He also served on the Ways and 
  35. Means Committee, and was Chairman of the Subcommittee on Social 
  36. Security.

  38.      Before his election to Congress, Jones was an attorney in 
  39. private practice in Tulsa, and served as a White House aide to 
  40. President Lyndon Johnson.  He holds a B.A. from the University of 
  41. Oklahoma and a J.D. from Georgetown Law School, and served as a 
  42. Captain in the U.S. Army from 1964-66.   He and his wife, Olivia, 
  43. have two sons, Geoffrey and Adam.  Jones is 54 years old.
